A Western-style machiya townhouse built in 1930
This townhouse, situated in the historic townscape of Utazu, reminds us of the nostalgia of the Showa era, the period of Japan's growth. The facade facing the street consists of simple walls with a light green mortar finish and with Western architectural styles incorporated into the details. This is completely different from that of Rinsui next door. However, Sezan's basic structure consists of koyagumi frame work used in traditional Japanese machiya townhouses. There is an alcove and decorative transoms when you enter the building. There you can see unmistakable machiya vestiges that once existed like a zashiki (tatami room). But the most important point of mention is that the tatami mats were replaced with solid walnut flooring during a renovation. The spacious area extends beyond the large sliding glass door to a wooden deck outside. Unwind in the simple open space.
